Elizabeth Bathory was a 17th-century Hungarian countess who tortured and killed young virgins so that she could bathe in their blood.  She believed that doing so would keep her young and beautiful.  Rumors of her treatment and murder of young women in the area had persisted for a while, but her status made her fairly untouchable. Not until she killed a few daughters of local nobles was she caught.  Bathory was sentenced to be bricked up in a room of her castle with only slits for air and food. She lasted around 3 years.  The exact number of victims is debated, but it's somewhere around 650 girls.
