In Medieval Europe, witch burnings were pretty common.  Sometimes it was the community and church being superstitious or a "healer" being misunderstood, but often it was a very efficient way to seize a widow's land and holdings.  Why wait for her to die when you can just accuse her of witchcraft?  Scholars disagree on just how many thousands of people were killed during these witch "hunts".
