Anna Strong was a member of the Culper Spy Ring in New York during the American Revolution.  She used her clothesline to communicate messages to the next agent.  A black petticoat and white handerchiefs served as code hanging on the hill next to her house, a perfect cover for any British soldier nosing around.  Just a woman hanging laundry....
