In 1920, Prohibition went into effect in the United States but it seemed like everyone flouted the law until its repeal in late 1933.  "Blind tigers," "blind pigs" and speakeasies cropped up everywhere, some disguised as pharmacies, to illegally sell alcohol.  According to Prohibition historian Daniell Okrent, "windfalls from legal alcohol sales helped... Walgreens grow from around 20 locations to more than 500 during the 1920s."
